BBS and the Cutty Sark Refurbishment Project

BBS Granite Concepts Ltd are extremely proud to have been part of the recent Cutty Sark refurbishment supply team, working with Volker Highways to deliver a fitting landscape for this iconic feature of Greenwich which stands tall in its former glory, attracting visitors worldwide to another British success story.

For our part we were tasked with supplying highly detailed paving, copings and other precision made granite units.

The square cut grooved paving was designed to replicate the rigging of the 19^th Century Tea Clipper, and was produced as a kit ensuring each piece linked to the next.

The granite supply to this project was monitored at all levels by BBS Granite Concepts, with factory visits undertaken and full progress reports submitted to the design team. Handling the specialist parts of the project gave us an opportunity to show how a design idea can be made into reality, and supplied to exacting standards.

Ebrington Barracks Regeneration in Derry

BBS Granite Concepts were delighted to have been involved in the supply of granite to the iconic and politically important regeneration of Ebrington barracks. Working with our customer SIAC NI this project, along with the peace bridge, marks a significant step forward for the peace process in Derry / Londonderry and Northern Ireland in general. It is an important symbol of communities coming closer together through urban regeneration and good streetscape design.

Granite Setts Paving

Paving setts are small pieces of stone or concrete dimensionally cut or manufactured to be laid as small paving. Rather than large paving slabs, the smaller setts enable designers to create patterns and designs, and also allow difficult areas to be laid without too much cutting.

What is Streetscape?

Streetscape is where a street, avenue, boulevard or similar is designed to incorporate a designers ideas using hard landscaping materials; ie a regeneration of an old street into a new public friendly and pleasing area.

What is Hardscape?

Hardscape means any area devoted to a landscape made up of hard wearing materials such as stone, concrete and other construction materials, as opposed to soft landscaping which is grass, bark and other such items.

A Donation from BBS Granite Concepts

On Wednesday 2^nd November, 2011 HRH The Duchess of Gloucester visited the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) Nottingham to mark the hospital’s work on organ donation.

During her visit the Duchess unveiled a bronze sculpture dedicated to all the deceased organ and tissue donors who in death have given the gift of life. The “Circle of Life” memorial was designed by Ann Vrielinck and is situated near the Medical School on the QMC site. The bronze sculpture was sited on Welsh Pennant stone donated by BBS Granite Concepts Ltd.

The Queen’s Medical Centre is known to be the largest hospital in the UK, and the largest teaching hospital in Europe (Source Wikipedia).

The hospital was originally opened in 1977 by HRH Queen Elizabeth II as the largest teaching hospital in the UK.

Last year (2010/11) was a record year for the organ donation team at the Trust with more organ donors than any other trust in the Midlands. More than 55 patients benefited from transplants Royal recognition for organ donation success from 17 deceased donors, representing a 90 per cent increase on 2009/10 (source www.blood.co.uk).

The Signature Building in Titanic Quarter

BBS Granite Concepts Ltd were delighted to work with Harcourt Construction on such an iconic project – The Signature Building in Titanic Quarter

Housed in a 6-floor building, this state-of-the-art visitor centre tells the story of the Titanic. The visitor journey starts in turn of the century Belfast, to learn why this city was so industrialised. From there, the story of Titanic is told: its’ inception, early construction, launch and finally the tragic maiden voyage.

The story is then brought up to date with the discovery of the wreck and into the future with live links to contemporary undersea exploration.

Northern Chinese Sandstone Quarry Deal

BBS Granite Concepts Ltd are pleased to announce an extraction rights deal with a Northern Chinese Sandstone quarry, which will enable us to supply the UK market high quality Grey/Buff Sandstone for years to come.

Having sourced and tested the sandstone we have made several visits to ensure all the necessary logistics and quality controls are in place; and will continue to carry out the visits and audits on a regular basis. We have a British Quality Control Officer who oversees all our production from the quarry face to the dock; this enables us to rest easy in the knowledge our material is of the highest standards.

Our initial contact in China was able to place us in touch with the local Government official who met with us to oversee the deal, and make sure the local community was well catered for and that employment was guaranteed for the surrounding population.

Our quarry has an annual extraction capability of around 40,000 m2 with additional areas of extraction nearby to increase this amount in the future.

We have already supplied areas of London such as BBC White City, Westfield Shopping Centre, Canon Street and numerous Boroughs, and we have supplied large amounts of this stone to Northern Ireland in line with the natural stone pallet agreed with the Northern Ireland Government and BBS Granite Concepts Ltd.

The relationships we have forged in China have placed us in high regard within numerous communities, and BBS Granite Concepts is seen as a company who can be trusted and who will deliver on our promises.

Northern Ireland Natural Stone Colour Pallets

BBS Granite Concepts have been working in conjunction with The Paul Hogarth company in Belfast and various government bodies, compiling a pallet of natural stone which is both affordable and aesthetically pleasing. The working party has achieved a pallet of materials which is now established as the accepted specification for new streetscape work throughout East Belfast and beyond.

It was felt that the material choices should be sympathetic to the surroundings, holding similarities to the natural materials that had been used historically, but above all needed to shout quality and raise the profile of the area. For this reason, our Chevin sandstone was chosen in conjunction with a buff granite.

The grey buff mix of colour through this stone, and the random swirls of mean that everyone can recognise that this is a quality material. Paul Hogarth Architects cleverly chose a traditional laying pattern incorporating different gauge widths and random lengths to further emphasise the nature of this material and reduce wastage in the production process.

A buff coloured granite which closely matches the existing material was chosen for the kerbs stones in order to withstand the harsh treatment they often receive. Using granite will ensure that these kerbs will last for 50 – 100 years delivering an excellent whole life cost.
